Jesus Vs. Religious Leaders |
|
My Sermon Notes
2 days before his death
Jesus was showing to us and those that were there that he was pure and clean, just like the animals in the Old Testament
But the religious leaders had another reason they were asking him questions.
They were trying to trap him, and make him look foolish in front of the people.
Luke 20:1
1 And it came to pass, that on one of those days, as he taught the people in the temple, and preached the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes came upon him with the elders,
The gospel he was preaching was:
Faith in Christ,
That would come in the flesh and die for men sins,
And rise again on the third day,
Then the religious leaders showed up.
2 And spoke unto him, saying, Tell us, by what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority?
What they saying is that, you didn’t go to our seminaries or schools, you’re not wearing our robes.
Just like today?
3 And he answered and said unto them, I will also ask you one thing; and answer me:
4 The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men?
Remember in Luke 7:28-30 it says that the religious leaders rejected his baptism.
28 For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.
29 And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.
30 But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.
5 And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then believed ye him not?
John said “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world”
6 But and if we say, Of men; all the people will stone us: for they be persuaded that John was a prophet.
These leaders did not accept John has a prophet.
See the wisdom of Jesus here; they were wrong either way they answer.
7 And they answered, that they could not tell whence it was.
Jesus was showing their ignorance, as religious leaders.
8 And Jesus said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.
You don’t deserve an answer he tells them.
Verses 9-16 Jesus tells a parable
It speaks about a land owner who had a vineyard, and he went out of town to live, and lease his vineyard to another farmer,
When it was time for the grapes to be harvest, he sent some servants to collect his share, and the farmers beat and kill them.
So he sent more servants, and the farmer did the same to them.
Finally the owner sent his son, thinking they wouldn’t kill him, but they did, thinking they would own the land.
Jesus asks what to you think the owner will do when he returns. And the Jewish people said; that he would put them to death, and lease the land to those who will harvest it, and pay him properly for the lease.
Jesus was speaking about the religious leaders here, verse 19 shows that he was,
Who keep killing the prophets of God,
17 And he beheld them, (religious leaders) and said, What is this then that is written, The stone (Jesus) which the builders (religious leaders) rejected, the same is become the head of the corner? He’s the one who holds everything together
18 Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; (meaning give their life to him) but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.
19 And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them.
These leaders wanted to put Jesus away, because they knew he was speaking of them.
But the people looked up to Jesus, that’s why they didn’t do it.
20 And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should act themselves just like men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor.
They sent these spies to act like a follower of Jesus, just so they could hope to find him to something wrong, so they could report it to the governor
21 And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person of any, but teachest the way of God truly:
What hypocrites, calling his master, master means you obey.
The rest of the verse all they are doing is trying to flatter him.
Their just trying to put on a show for the people.
This the first time they tried to make him look like he didn’t know what he was talking about.
22 Is it lawful for us to give tribute (taxes) unto Caesar, or no?
a) Again they’re trying to trap him, if he says yes, then they have him,
b) It would be a popular disfavor to the people
c) But if he says no then they can go to the Roman government and accuse him of disloyalty to Caesar.
d) Now Jesus is given the answer from the Holy Spirit
Luke 12:11-12
11 And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say:
12 For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say.
e) Jesus who was just a carpenter, comes back with an answer that blows them away.
23 But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, Why tempt ye me?
They though they were smart enough to trap him,
And Jesus says onto them, who are you to try to trap me,
24 Shew me a penny. Whose image and superscription hath it? They answered and said, Caesar's.
I’m sure they believed they had him now, because he didn’t even know whose image was on the coin.
25 And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar's, and unto God the things which be God's.
He gave them a very simple answer,
But give me your heart, and worship
26 And they could not take hold of his words before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace.
They couldn’t come back with anything, to make him look bad in front of the people, so they gave up.
And the people were amazed at his answer,
After they had failed, then other group of religious leaders came to see if they could trap him
And these two religions didn’t like each other, because they had different beliefs.
They tried a second time to trap him
27 Then came to him certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him,
28 Saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man's brother die, having a wife, and he die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
I taught this in the book of Ruth, and also in Deut 25:5-6
29 There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died without children.
30 And the second took her to wife, and he died childless.
31 And the third took her; and in like manner the seven also: and they left no children, and died.
32 Last of all the woman died also.
33 Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them is she? for seven had her to wife.
They said in verse 1 that there is no resurrection, but their using it right here to try to trap him.
34 And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage:
Jesus starts answering the question real simple, in your world; this is the way it is.
35 But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage:
He says; but those who are worthy of being raised from the dead, won’t be marry or engaged to get marry.
36 Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.
a) Remember how I taught that you only die once, this is what he saying right here.
b) Right here we see that God had to send a man to die on the cross, because he couldn’t send an angel, because angels can’t die, unless they are falling angels.
c) This is for the born again Christians, who can be resurrected.
37 Now that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.
Since they believed in Moses in verse 28, Jesus is using him to prove to them what he just said.
Now that I have told you that there is a resurrection, and you believe in Moses.
38 For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him.
What state are you in without Jesus in your heart?
Who do you live for? Yourself or Him.
39 Then certain of the scribes answering said, Master, thou hast well said.
40 And after that they durst not ask him any question at all.
They are still calling him teacher, and not Lord, just like Judas.
And when they saw they could not trap him, they didn’t ask him any more questions.
And because he showed more wisdom and knew more than the religious leaders, his followers grew.
This man with no scholar education, no big professional name, had people believing in him rather the religious leaders, and Jesus was just a carpenter, lead by the Spirit.
41 And he said unto them, How say they that Christ is David's son?
Their saying that the Christ is the son of David.
42 And David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,
43 Till I make thine enemies thy footstool.
David is saying that Jehovah God has told Jesus, to sit on his right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool.
44 David therefore calleth him Lord, how is he then his son?
Jesus is showing the religious leaders, that the Christ is more than just a human,
Speaking of himself, that he is Lord.
The father is always head of the son, so how can David call him Lord, if he’s just a son?
Now Jesus could be called the great great great grandson, but Jesus is not speaking about being and ancestor, he is showing himself has being deity here, because he is being called Lord.
45 Then in the audience of all the people he said unto his disciples,
46 Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts;
47 Which devour widows' houses, and for a shew make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation.
Because of the religions today, you have to read and study the bible yourselves.
Baptist, for them to even consider, if the word of God is infallible, is an embarrassment.
Methodist, for them to vote on rather homosexuals should be preachers.
Catholics, read the New Testament or just the 4 gospels and then go to church and see if the church is doing, or not doing, what the word of God is saying?
Jesus asked the religious leaders three questions verse 4, 41 and 44 and that’s why they didn’t dare ask him another question.
We owe Jesus all of our praise, worship, and loyalty.
Because he is perfect, plus his words say in
Ps 118:8-9
8 It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man.
9 It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in princes. (men who have power, in whatever state, religious, government, etc.)
Jesus was showing to us and those that were there that he was pure and clean, just like the animals in the Old Testament
But the religious leaders had another reason they were asking him questions.
They were trying to trap him, and make him look foolish in front of the people.
