My Sermon Notes
The bread and wine is spiritual
1 Cor 10:1-4
1 Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;
2 And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;
3 And did all eat the same spiritual meat; Matt 4:4
4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.
1) I want to remind you about your ancestors, when they were in the wilderness, and the Lord guided by a cloud that moved in front of them, and they walked through the sea on dry ground.
2) These ancestors were baptized as followers of Moses.
3) They ate the same spiritual food. What was that food?
4) And all of them drank the same spiritual water.
That meat and drink was Jesus, remember it’s speaking about it spiritually.
Matt 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
Here’s other verse in the bible to show that Jesus is God.
Jesus is that water or drink
John 7:37-39
37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
This great feast, it was like Mardi Gras, so Jesus had to yell with a loud voice, to get their attention,
Jesus was a very tough man, many of those whipping, and getting hit with a rod, most of us men probably couldn’t have taken, but he did.
Here we see again that Jesus is that spiritual water to drink.
38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
John 4:10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
He’s speaking about the Comforter John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
The Holy Spirit was in the old testament also.
Ps 51:11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.
Ezek 36:27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.
Heb 10:22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.
Jesus is the bread
John 6:27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.
Two kinds of food, that which perisheth, and one that’s everlasting.
John 6:30-36, 50-58
30 They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work?
31 Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.
32 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.
The people are saying that Moses gave them bread from heaven.
Jesus says “I say unto you Moses did not give you bread from heaven, because I’m the true bread from heaven which my Father gave you not Moses.
33 For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.
John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life,
34 Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.
35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
This means spiritually you’ll never hungry, or be thirsty.
Because I’ve been hungry before, and thirsty, so it’s not speaking about a physical way.
36 But I said unto you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not.
The people saw his miracles, and how he was healing them, but they were following him for what they could get, and not for the real reason he was there.
50 This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.
51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, (life) which I will give for the life of the world.
52 The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat? Does the Lord want us to become cannibals?
53 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.
a) Again like in verse 35 this is a spiritually, not physically eat.
b) It really wasn’t his body, he was speaking symbolically (represent) because he was there with them
Acts 15:28-29
28 For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things;
29 That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.
The Apostles are saying this 20 years after Jesus had left?
Ps 16:4 Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another god: their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names into my lips.
c) How bout the man on the cross next to Jesus, no baptism, and no Lord supper?
d) “Ye have no life in you” it has to mean spiritually.
54 Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
55 For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.
56 He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.
All these verses I’ve read is speaking spiritually, if it means physically, then that means that you can not be born again until you have the Lords supper.
And that fits in with – speaking in tongues, water baptism,
The scriptures teach Jesus only to get saved.
What he is saying in vs 56 is if you live in me and I in you then you have this spiritual food.
57 As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.
I live because my father sent me, in the same way; anyone who feeds on me will live because of me.
58 This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.
Again he is referring back to verse 32 Moses gave them not bread from heaven, and it wasn’t this bread.
In verse 60 is disciples said, this is hard to understand.
So in verse 63 Jesus said “It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
It doesn’t say that the supper makes you alive.
“the flesh profit nothing”, it doesn’t matter what we do physically, it’s all done in the Spirit.
When we do the Lords supper we are to remember his
Love
His sacrifice,
His return,
Confessions of our sins, 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
The Lords Supper
Matt 26:27-29
27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;
28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
29 But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.
29) What we do tonight, is just a fore taste of what’s ahead. Because the next time we do it together will be in heaven.
Another place in scriptures about the Lord Supper is
1 Cor 11:24-30
24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.
a) Heb 10:5 that is why, when Christ came into the world, he said to God, "You did not want animal sacrifices or sin offerings. But you have given me a body to offer.
b) Remember the things I have done for you, you were dead and now alive.
25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.
How many times you do this, just remember him in everything.
26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.
He doesn’t say how many times to do it.
We recognize that he die on the cross, for us, but we also recognize that he’s coming again for us.
Gal 1:4 Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:
John 10:18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.
John 14:2-3
2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.
Many come to the table unworthy, because for them it’s a ritual, they do it in the flesh, not in their heart, and they treat it lightly rather than seriously.
They come with sins, they hadn’t repented about.
It dishonors the Lord, You’re treating his words has tough they mean nothing.
28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.
a) Matt 14:31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?
b) Are we walking with him, are we obedient to his words.
c) This sacrament that the Christian church is regarded as outward visible sign, to inward and spiritual grace. If you’re not right inside then don’t do the outside ceremony.
29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.
This has nothing to do with salvation, the Lord is speaking to Christian here.
You bring judgment on yourself,
For not recognizing what the Lords body represents, and the importance in it.
30 For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.
For the Christian who does this, he can bring sickness, meaning if you’re not taking this seriously, than you’re likely not to be taken the whole word of God, that way, so he’s not responsible for what happens to you.
“many sleep” meaning die.
In Acts 5:1-11 it speaks about a husband and wife, who lied to the Holy Spirit, and die for doing it.
In the old testament only the priests could take of communion, and now we can, because he has made us priests also.
Rev 1:6 And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
Rev 5:10 And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.
Heb 10:19 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,
Mark 15:38 And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom.
1 Cor 10:1-4
1 Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;
2 And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;
