My Sermon Notes:
What is Born Again?
The Flesh- (ref: Unger’s Bible Dictionary) mere human nature, the earthly nature of man apart from Gods divine influence.
The Natural Man - In Hebrew natural means sensual, which is referring to the body and the physical senses.
1 Cor 2:14 But people who aren't spiritual can't receive these truths from God's Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them and they can't understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means.
Jude 18-19
18 They told you that in the last times there would be scoffers whose purpose in life is to satisfy their ungodly desires. 19 These people are the ones who are creating divisions among you. They follow their natural instincts because they do not have God's Spirit in them.
James 3:15 For jealousy and selfishness are not God's kind of wisdom. Such things are earthly, unspiritual, and demonic.
The Old Man or Outward Man
Eph 4:22 Throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception.
Corrupt- your former life was corrupt and unclean; you lived in the pursuit of pleasure and happiness; you sought this in the gratification of the lusts of the flesh; and you were deceived by these lusts, and disappointed in your expectations. (There is no true pleasure and happiness without Christ.)
The Heart- is the innermost center of the natural condition of man.
Jer 17:9 "The human heart is the most deceitful of all things,
and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?
Prov 28:26 He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered.
Who can know it? A corrupt heart is the worst enemy a man can have; it is full of evil devices,-- of deceit, and abomination; and you don’t know what is in it till it boils over, Therefore, trust not in your heart, which purposes are continually changing, by motives of self-interest.
Matt 15:19 For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander.
Ps 58:2 No! You plot injustice in your hearts. You spread violence throughout the land.
Gen 6:5 The Lord observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth, and he saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil.
Prov 23:7
For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he:
The Carnal Mind- governed by mere human nature, not by the Spirit of God.
Matt 12:34
O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
Rom 7:18-8:2
18 And I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. I want to do what is right, but I can't. 19 I want to do what is good, but I don't. I don't want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway. 20 But if I do what I don't want to do, I am not really the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it. 21 I have discovered this principle of life—that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. 22 I love God's law with all my heart. 23 But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me. 24 Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? 25 Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord. So you see how it is: In my mind I really want to obey God's law, but because of my sinful nature I am a slave to sin.
8 So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.
We are sinners and dead without Jesus
Rom 3:23 “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”
Rom 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord”.
John 11:25 Jesus told her, "I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying.
Eph 2:1 “And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins”;
Eph 2:5 that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God's grace that you have been saved!)
Matt 25:46 “And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal”.
Who needs to be born again?
John 3:1-16
1 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:
Nicodemus in his religion was equal to a Cardinal in some religions; he was up there,
There are 3 religions in Jewish nation, Pharisees, Scribes, and Sadducees, Nicodemus was a Pharisees which was the most religious, they lived on the word of God (Old Testament),
They started to have great sin, and in between the Old Testament was completed until the New Testament started which was about 400 yrs, when the Lord was quiet.
During that time the Jews started making their own laws and rules, the same as today, taking scriptures and just pulling them apart to mean something else that would benefit them (traditions),
2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.
In vs 2, you would think Jesus would be please with Nicodemus, for calling him a teacher from God, and that God sent him, but he was not please with that, because Nicodemus hadn’t recognize him as Lord, just like Peter in Matt 17:4-5 Peter put Moses, and Elias in with Jesus, and God answer and said, “hear ye him”.
So Jesus saw that Nicodemus was not yet there, and Jesus said that you’re not even going to see the Kingdom of God. Eph 2:1 “Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins.”
Nicodemus was a slave to his religion, one reason I say that is because he had to go by night, to see a man that his religion was trying to get rid of,
3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
Nicodemus knew what Jesus was saying, when he said “can I enter a second time into my mother’s womb; he knew he was talking about the water sack.
5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Jesus told Nicodemus he was lost, so if that was true then, don’t you think it would be true today, preacher in high places are lost, since the Lord said that there would be wolves among us,
John 1:12-13 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
Eph 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Eph 4:22-24
22 throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. 23 Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. 24 Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.
Acts 4:12 There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved."
Rom 12:1-2 And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. 2 Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God's will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
2 Cor 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things (friends and any kind of darkness) are passed away; behold all things are become new. (New nature to do righteousness)
Rom 12:9 Don't just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good.
7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
I know that all this time you felt that you were there?
8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
9 Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?
Eccl 11:5 Just as you cannot understand the path of the wind or the mystery of a tiny baby growing in its mother's womb, so you cannot understand the activity of God, who does all things.
10 Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?
Again he is saying, you are a religious leader and you don’t know these things?
John 3 speaks about a good religious man, but John 4 talks about a bad women who is a whore, she worshipped whatever, and he said to both of them the same thing, they needed Jesus,
In 1Sam 16:7 the Lord looks at the heart, not what you do. Example – Sons of Jesse, Samuel had to anoint a new King from the 8 sons, who did he pick?
1 John 5:1 “Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God”:
The devil was an angel who lived with God in heaven, but God kick him out of heaven, because he wanted to be equal with God. So the devil and his demons believe in God more than you and me. Not only that, he probably knows the scriptures better than me and you, because he quoted the scripture to Jesus, when he tempted him for 40 days and nights.
Matt 4:5-6 “Then the devil took him to the holy city, Jerusalem, to the highest point of the Temple, and said, "If you are the Son of God, jump off! For the Scriptures say, 'He will order his angels to protect you. And they will hold you up with their hands so you won't even hurt your foot on a stone”.
So the devil believes and knows the bible more than me and you.
The word believe in the bible means to trust and commit
John 14:6 “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me”.
Matt 16:25-26 “If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?”
What Jesus did to save us. Luke 22:44 says “He sweat blood out of so much agony” while praying on the night He was betrayed by Judas. This is something that can happen even now, but it is fatal for those who have. On the way to the cross He had to walk between 70 Roman soldiers who hit Him in the face with their fists. This alone should have almost killed Him, but they also gave Him 39 lashes with a whip having sharp objects on it so that it would tear the flesh off His back. They put thorns on his head. The Bible says He didn’t even look like a man anymore (Isa 52:14). Then they nailed Him to a cross to die.
What do you have to do for salvation?
When you’re ready to pray for salvation, because that is what you need to make it to heaven, to be saved or born again,
When you decide to give your life to the Lord, first you have to confess you are a sinner, and then repent of those sins,
1 John 1:9 “But if we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.”
(Just confess your sins to him, and he will forgive you no matter how bad you think you’re sin is, he will clean you up)
Mark 1:15 “And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.”
Mark 6:12 “And they went out, and preached that men should repent.”
Luke 13:3 “I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.”
Acts 2:38 “Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”
Acts 3:19 “Now repent of your sins and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped away.”
Not only do you confess your sins, you also have to repent of them, meaning completely turn away from.
There are people who confess their sins, but have no true repentance. They just keep doing the same sin over and over. This is what separates true believers from the ones who say they are believers, but it’s not coming from the heart. The Bible says to confess and repent. These two go together.
There is only 1 sin that sends you to hell
Matt 12:31 “Every sin and blasphemy can be forgiven—except blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, which will never be forgiven.”
Col 2:6-8 “As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him, Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ
The Flesh- (ref: Unger’s Bible Dictionary) mere human nature, the earthly nature of man apart from Gods divine influence.
- John 6:63 Human effort accomplishes nothing.
- Rom 8:8 so then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
- Rom 7:18 And I know that nothing good lives in me.
- Rom 7:5 For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.
- I Jn 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
